Pál Závada

Guest of the book fair Svět knihy Praha 2024

Pál Závada was born into a Hungarian-Slovak family in Tótkomlós, Hungary. Originally, he worked as a sociologist. He is the author of six novels, for which he has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Kossuth Prize in 2005 for his contribution to the Hungarian art and culture. His novel Jadviga párnája [Jadviga’s Pillow, 1997] is one of the most successful works of contemporary fiction in Hungary; it has spawned a theatre and film adaptation. In his novel Természetes fény [Natural Light, 2014], he revisits his place of birth and depicts the life of its inhabitants during World War II and after it. The film adaptation of this novel, directed by Dénes Nagy, won the Silver Bear for best director at the Berlinale in 2021. His most recent novel in Hungarian is Apfelbaum. Nagyvárad, Berlin (2022).
